Living longer is not the goal. Living well for longer is. What the difference means, and where olive oil fits in.
Longevity is a number: how many years. Healthspan is a different question: how many of those years you spend well. Able to move, think, work, travel, cook, keep up with the people you love. Most people, asked which they would choose, do not hesitate.
The two do not automatically move together. Medicine has become very good at extending life. It has been slower at extending the years that feel like living. For a physician who has spent a career treating serious illness, that gap is the whole point. "After years of treating illness, I became interested in preventing illness," says Lawrence Piro, MD. "And this product is a big step in the right direction."
What the research actually measures
When researchers study olive oil and health, they rarely study a pill-like effect. They study a habit inside a way of eating, followed over many years, in large groups of people. Three pieces of that research are worth knowing by name.
In 2022, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology published an analysis of 92,383 American adults followed for 28 years. Those who consumed more than half a tablespoon of olive oil a day had a 19 percent lower risk of death from any cause than those who rarely or never used it.
In 2018, the New England Journal of Medicine published the final results of PREDIMED, a randomized trial of 7,447 older adults in Spain. Those assigned to a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil had roughly 30 percent fewer major cardiovascular events than those assigned to a low-fat diet.
And in January 2026, the US Dietary Guidelines for 2025 to 2030 named olive oil explicitly: "When cooking with or adding fats to meals, prioritize oils with essential fatty acids, such as olive oil."
None of these is a study of PiroMD, and none of them says a single food does the work on its own. They describe a pattern, kept for years, in which extra virgin olive oil is a daily presence. That is the pattern PiroMD is built to make easy to keep.
Healthspan is a daily practice
The people who age best, in Dr. Piro's experience, "aren't the most extreme. They're the most consistent." Sleep, movement, real food, curiosity, and a few small things done every day without exception. A shot of olive oil is one of the small things. It is not a shortcut, and it is not meant to be. It is a daily habit with a long body of research behind it, in a form you will actually keep.
