Most olive oil sold in the United States cannot tell you who grew the olives. Why that matters, and how PiroMD is built differently.
Pick up a bottle of olive oil in an American supermarket and read the back. "Bottled in Italy." "Product of EU." "Blend of oils from Spain, Greece, Tunisia and Italy." "Mediterranean blend." The label is telling you, quite honestly, that the oil inside has a long and mostly invisible history.
That is how the commodity olive oil trade works. Bulk oil from thousands of growers is collected, blended at industrial scale, sold to importers, and bottled under dozens of different labels. The brand on the bottle and the grower who pressed the oil rarely have any direct relationship. The word "Italian" on the front often describes the bottling plant, not the olives.
Why the gap matters
Traceability is not only a question of honesty. It is a question of what is in the oil. The compounds that distinguish a fresh extra virgin olive oil are fragile. They depend on when the olives were picked, how fast they reached the mill, what temperature they traveled at, and how the oil was stored afterward. When an oil has passed through four countries and three tanks before it is bottled, nobody can answer those questions, and the answers are usually not good.
A traceable oil is one where every one of those questions has a name attached to it.
How PiroMD is built
PiroMD comes from selected organic groves in Tuscany, Umbria and Puglia and is milled in Tuscany. Romain Piro, who produces the oil, knows every grove that contributes to the blend. The olives travel to the mill in refrigerated trucks and are milled soon after picking, because heat and time begin to break down the oil's compounds before pressing has even started.
The oil is certified organic by Ecocert and carries the USDA Organic seal. Every shot declares its harvest date and its best-by date.
The blend is proprietary. The varieties shift slightly from year to year, because a good miller follows the optimal olives, not a recipe. The standards do not shift.
Grove → refrigerated truck → mill → shot. That is the whole route, and every step of it has a name.
Two Piro families
There is one more thread in the story. The EVOO in PiroMD is co-created by Lawrence Piro, MD, a renowned physician in Los Angeles, and Romain Piro, the award-winning Extra Virgin Olive Oil producer in Tuscany. The two families were separated generations ago and share Neapolitan ancestry. Marie-Charlotte Piro, Romain's sister, brought them together and created the PiroMD protocol with them. It is a small company by design. That is what makes the traceability real.
